The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will be hosting Roanoke Author Beth Macy, this Sunday at 3 pm. She will be speaking on her widely popular book, “Factory Man,” which hones in on the outlier story of John Bassett III, who used grit, cunning
and sheer will to compete against China — to keep his Galax, Virginia, factory going when almost every other wood-furniture maker in America closed up shop and imported cheaper imports instead. She weaves the story of an industry change into one about the powerful Bassett family and its history, exposing the conflict and closeness of this family and its business that once was the world’s largest manufacturer of wood furniture.
The book landed on a variety of lists, including the New York Times bestseller list and has been optioned by Tom Hanks for production as an HBO TV series. Macy, the families beat reporter at The Roanoke Times for two decades, currently is working on a book about race relations in the Roanoke Valley and the circus. She has been published in Oprah magazine, Parade, The New York Times, Salon and the Christian Science Monitor.
The event will take place on the upper level next to Belk. Their will be copies of the book available for purchase to have autographed by Author Beth Macy

WSLS 10 and Kodiak Shredding are hosting a free "Shred-A-Thon". The event will run from 6am - 2pm in the mall parking lot. Items that can be shredded include legal and financial documents such as old bills, credit card offers, and anything with your personal information that you want to safely get rid of.
